So What Do You Use???
So I have just created a ranger for the first time and i am wondering what is a good build for general use to get through the game.
I have all Games and I started in Factions.
I have 1 one request for the builds and that is that a pet can be used with it but doesnt rely on them like the beastmaster builds.

BHa+epidemic(+pet with condition spreading?)
edit:basic Bha build is using broad head arrow[E]+epidemic to spread mass dazed for mad interupts with skills like voley. If you realy want to use a pet you could use skills like poisenous bite to spread poisen and shit,if you can fit it in.

Since you have all campaign then you i can give you 2 suggestions. If you like to wade in the middle of things then just use a modified thumper build. Use a sword or an axe so you can carry a shield and have additional armor and hp. Then just limit yourself to around 3 atks on the weapon of your choice then carry BM skills on the rest Heal as One is handy since its a decent enough heal unless your not concerned on that hehehe. If however you like long range then just combine archery + bm skill setup kinda like a thumper. Just remember though that using this type of build oftens makes you less effective since your spreading your points out to thinly. One way i use this type of build though is when i have heroes esp rit heroes. Then i just use 3 rangers (including self) +2 hero ranger +1 rit (setup for splinter type build) then go to town on em areas hehehe works great when mobs clumps up. Well hope that helps if you need a sample build just holler though im sure you can figure it out.

No point in Barrage now, Volley outclasses it, and Animals suck unless you're using tons of them as bodyblockers.
Besides -- D-Shot AND Savage Shot should be on most Ranger bars.
@The OP -- BHA + Epidemic = Ohai, i autowin pve kthx.

Reading the sticky about the basics of playing ranger would help with creating builds, or using good, established builds.

Hi there. I have been looking for a good Ranger/Ele build that uses either a cheap long lasting or fast recharge stance. Best I can come up with is to go R/W and use [skill]Flurry[/skill]. Anybody have any ideas?
Thanks!

IMHO, the best Ranger stances for general play are Natural Stride and Lightning Reflexes. The one I choose is based on whether or not I'm actually using Wilderness Survival.

Wrong. Barrge does more damage and hits more foes. On a barrage bar there is generally not an elite that would fit well to replace it.

It outclasses it because it frees up your elite slot, and it fills the max hits on a 10 spec Splinter Weapon, when you can take something that can also be a stronger alternative, such as BHA. Epidemic on a hero, or you use Epidemic, and a hero uses Splinter Weapon, and you interrupt all enemies within the AoE range casting spells.
Volley is much more efficient at doing that than Barrage.

My starting ranger build looked like this and it worked well in many situations:
1. Power shot or some other straightforward attack
2. Dualshot/some other sort of differed attack
3. An Interupt
4. Elite Skill of choice
5. Preparation or Stance if preps are not liked
6. Defensive Stance
7. Defensive stance or speed boost
8. A heal, usually Troll Unguent

My guess is if you're taking splinter on your bar, you're going for AoE damage. If that's the case, barrage is a MUCH better choice. I'm not a huge fan of barrage (to be effective with it you need to not only devote your entire bar, but the bar of several other rangers and an orders/curses Necro), but going splinter volley just to free up your elite slot seems highly unnecisary when barrage does more damage, hits more targets, and can be spammed more.
To OP: if you want a pet in your build, an R/P packhunter would be your most efficient option. Combine a RaO spear chunker (I'll load a few examples later) with a curses hero (barbs and mark of pain come to
mind) and you can tear through enemies.
Other than that, I can't see any decent builds using pets without taking up useful slots on the bar.
Two powerful bars with alot of utility slots (you can fit a low spec pet in there) are the Broad Head Arrow Epedimic R/Me, which there's realy not much use for daze outside HM and the occassional caster boss, and the R/D Ebon Dust Aura Volley blind bot, which is again, useless outside HM.
And again I'll posts builds when I get home to my computer.

I use BHA Epidemic, and put Splinter Weapon on a hero.
It works out very nicely.

Volley can never 'outclass' Barrage for the purposes you'd typically bring Barrage, AoE damage. Someone already pointed out that Barrage can hit more targets and adds more bonus damage. I'd add to that that Barrage can be fired every shot, while Volley's recharge limits it to firing it every other shot. All in all Barrage offers a substantial advantage in damage.

There is no reason why Splinter Weapon would not work with Barrage. However Barrage itself will add substantially more to the damage output then Volley can.

Concussion Shot is a non-Elite alternative to BHA and when daze is spread with Epidemic, Barrage still can hit more dazed foes then Volley could.

Great procedure, you're BHA-ing a foe, then a hero has to Epidemic the Daze, you cast Splinter Weapon and do a AoE with a Volley-Splinter, once every, say 6 seconds and hope to interrupt something, with Volley. Splinter Weapon does AoE damage not AoE hits. Daze, according to the book, requires an attack to hit and not just damage to easily interrupt, if it'd be just damage Ignite Arrows on an IAS Flatbow would rock.

For basic condition/interrupt, go with BA/Apply poison or BHA/Epidemic. For multiple attackers, Triple Shot/Dual Shot is better than Barrage for one reason- preparation use without going out of the ranger's attributes. That's more points you can put into doing what the ranger does best. You can interrupt better, recharge with the extra in Expertise, and have an open elite slot. Besides, you are much more likely to get clumps of two-three enemies than you are to get a mob worthy of carrying Barrage.

Just power shot, Penaltration shot, Read the wind. Basic builds where you get your skill as a ranger. It's fine for you to pass through the game. Though for some missions, it better to use a specific builds to make it easier!

You have more options if you use volley instead of barrage but other than the build that you stated (which I use often), there isn't really anything else that volley really excels in.
Course there are always the gimmicky builds...
